Back pain is one of the most common health complaints. In fact, it is estimated that 80 percent of people will suffer from back pain at some point. Knowing the cause of your back pain is one of the keys to properly treating it. There are a number of things that can cause back pain.
Sprain and Strain
These are two of the most common causes of back pain. A strain or sprain can cause upper or lower back pain. A strain or sprain can be caused by lifting an object that is too heavy. If you do not lift an object the correct way, then you may also strain or sprain your back. It can also be caused by poor posture. Additionally, sports injuries can cause a strain or sprain.
Muscular irritation is one of the possible causes of upper back pain. Irritation can occur due to overuse injuries or de-condition. Automobile accidents, strains and sports injuries can cause muscular irritation.
Degenerative Disc Disease
When you are born, your discs are full of water and healthy. However, your discs wear down and lose hydration as you get older. This is known as degenerative disc disease. This can cause the disc to collapse. Degenerative disc disease can cause pain in the upper and lower back.
Osteoarthritis is another one of the most common causes of back pain. This condition can cause pain and inflammation in the bones in the upper and lower back. Osteoarthritis can develop at any age, but it is most likely to develop in people who are over the age of 50. It typically develops and progresses slowly. Osteoarthritis is also known as degenerative joint disease.
Sciatica is a condition that causes a sharp pain in the lower back and/or down the leg. It occurs when a herniated disc presses on the nerve.
Osteoporosis can cause upper or lower back pain. It is a condition that causes the bones to become brittle and porous. Osteoporosis is more likely to develop in women who are over the age of 50. However, it can affect men and younger people.
